You Are Brilliant

It kills me how everyone is so beautiful and they can’t accept it. The world is constantly trying to make them believe that they’re not good enough. Well they’re not good enough. They’re brilliant. You’re brilliant. We are all so brilliant.

How can anyone ever expect someone to love them when they don’t even love themselves? It doesn’t matter how often people tell you you’re beautiful, smart, funny, adorable, if you don’t believe it.

If you want something. Go get it.

If you love someone. Tell them how much you love them.

If you have something to say. Scream it at the top of your lungs.

If you ARE someone. Show the world who you are.

You’re not just beautiful. You’re brilliant. You’re not just pretty. You’re perfect. You’re not just a person. You are you. You are. You.

The Artist

At first, I was skeptical about this movie. I was not sure how a silent film would be received in this day and age where society is obsessed with special effects, fast cars, sword fights on the edges of volcanoes, women with conveniently tight fitting clothing and, many times, no clothes at all. What appeals to me more than any of the things that I have just mentioned is dialogue and, of course, a silent film has no spoken dialogue and the only way you can know what the characters are saying is by reading their lips and by reading the occasional title card. I should also mention that the movie is in black and white.

I can almost see the horrified looks on your faces. An entire movie without speaking? Trust me, it is not as awful as it sounds. By watching this movie, it brought to light how much more there is to a movie than spoken dialogue and if you are a true movie lover, I highly recommend that you see this film.

The movie is set in the Silent Era when movies were all silent and it follows a famous actor, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) who is forced to slowly transition into a new era when “talkies” become common place. A young actress named Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) becomes a rising star of the new “talkies” and, incidentally, pushes Valentin out of the spotlight.

This romantic homage to the silent films was completely enchanting and I left the theater enraptured. The use of old fashioned humor was sprinkled through the film perfectly, the story was romantic and surprisingly cohesive, and no one was more impressive than Uggie, Valentin’s loyal companion, who I like to call the Meryl Streep of dogs.

It is a shame that this movie is only playing in selected theaters because everyone should have the chance to see this charming film. I had to drive 45 minutes from my town to see it and it was definitely worth the drive. If you plan on watching the Oscars this Sunday, make sure that you see this movie because I have a feeling that it will win many awards and it deserves every one of them.

Poetry

Poetry is one of my favorite things in the world. I believe that there is a bit of perfection in everything but nothing more so than poetry. It is more magical than music and more lyrical than any song; there are lines from my favorite poems that have affected me on almost a  spiritual level. I want to share one of my favorite poems with you, it is short yet profound.

In a Station of the Metro
The apparition of these faces in the crowd ;
Petals on a wet, black bough.
— Ezra Pound

This poem originally had over 30 lines but Pound cut it down to only two and every single word has a purpose. While the first line    may be a bit hazy, the second line brings more clarity. When I read this poem, I see a the ghostly figures blending together as they waft through a black, rainy Metro station in Paris. Isn’t this poem lovely?

My Oscar Picks

Since the Oscars are only a week away, I thought I would share with you my picks for Best Picture, Actor in A Leading Role, and Actress in A Leading Role.

Best Picture: Midnight in Paris

This is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time and while it isn’t stretching the boundaries of cinema like films such as The Artist and The Tree of Life, it is filled to the brim with wit and charm set in the beautiful backdrop of Paris, France.

Actor in A Leading Role: Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors and he totally deserves to win this award. While there were so many amazing actors in this film, Gary Oldman stands out as the reserved, perceptive intelligent expert caught in the middle of a hunt for a Soviet double agent in the 1970s.

Actress in A Leading Role: Rooney Mara in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

At first, I was not at all sure about Rooney Mara playing Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo but I was pleasantly surprised when she turned out to be one hundred percent believable in the role. Not only did she succeed at portraying the strangely loveable sociopath from the bestselling novels, I cannot imagine anyone else filling that role besides Noomi Rapace.

Show Me, Don’t Tell Me

In my Fiction Writing class, my professor had all of the students rewrite seven sentences and to convey the same idea that the original sentences convey without coming right out and saying it. Here are the sentences she told us to rewrite and below each sentences are my rewritten sentences:

1. The little girl looked so tired that I knew it was naptime.

Once the peanut butter sandwich was eaten, four year old Andrea’s eyes became heavy as naptime approached.

2. I’ll never forget how I felt when Fluffy died. I was miserable.

My eyes were red from crying and mascara had stained the sides of my face. These are the details from Fluffy’s death that cling to my memory.

3. From the way she behaved in the crowded restaurant, you could tell Sally was attracted to the cute stranger in the black shirt. She tried a few things to get his attention, and eventually she succeeded.

Sally ran a hand through her electric blue hair, her brown eyes transfixed on the boy with the Black Keys t-shirt behind the counter at the coffee shop. She ordered a mocha latte and took off her jacket revealing that she was wearing a Black Keys t-shirt as well. He smiled at her as he took her order.

4. I like many different types of sports, from skiing to rock-climbing, but when it comes right down to it, I would have to say that ping-pong is my favorite sport.

There is no other sport quite like pin pong, I love the melodic sound of the ball hitting one paddle then skipping across the table to be hit yet again. I love that sound.

5. Stacia is very allergic to seafood.

Stacia stared at the salmon as if it were poison, her face contorted with apparent disgust. She knew if she ate the fish, her tongue would swell up and her face would break out but when she looked at her date and thought about how hard he had slaved to make the dinner, she slowly took a bite, fully aware of her fate.

6. Blaze knew that she was really in love with him.

Elise’s face was flushed as she nervously played with the ends of her auburn hair. Blaze felt uncomfortable, finally realizing that she was in love with him.

7. Mrs. Jackson was a self- righteous, religious fanatic.

Mrs. Jackson attended church every Sunday and Wednesday nights and has memorized every hymn and recited verses from the Bible whenever an opportunity presented itself. When she found out that I was an atheist, she promptly told me that I was going to hell.

Writing

I was eight years old when I first began to write. It was after I began to read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I remember opening the small blue journal I had received as a gift and began to weave my tale on its blank pages. The story was simple, it was about four siblings who entered a magical world where dogs could fly and lizards could talk. I was convinced that I would be the first author in elementary school to have a book on the New York Times Best Sellers List. Now I realize that the story would be considered pure garbage to anyone who read it. But awful as it may be, it still has a special place in my heart.

Writing is the thing I love the most. I wanted to be a novelist ever since I was eight years old and this desire has only increased with time. I want to share my ideas with the world, I want people to see my point of view. I don’t want to try to discover myself in my writing or find out new things about myself, I just want to change people’s minds. I want people to see things in a different light. I want to spread my ideas to the world.
